| Caveat | DOE models a right-skewed cost distribution for a 300 MW small boiling-water reactor (median ~$13,000/kW) against ~$8,500/kW for a large reactor; specific designs have different cost profiles. EPRI's August 2023 analysis (report 3002026582) uses $8,460/kWe first-of-a-kind and $5,134/kWe nth-of-a-kind for light-water SMRs, in 2022 dollars. OPG's C$7.7B Darlington budget covers the first unit plus systems common to four units, a different cost boundary. The ~$20,000/kW figure in circulation is the cancelled NuScale/UAMPS project ($9.3B for 462 MWe), an all-in financed estimate, not overnight cost. |
