Part 6

The Building: Civil, Structural, Fire/Life-Safety & Construction Execution

9 chapters

6.1
Building Typologies & Data-Hall Layout
In an AI factory the electrical and mechanical plant can take more of the site than the data hall does, so your building type bets on a density ramp that is still moving. Plan indoor and site area separately before you commit.
6.2
Structural & Civil Engineering for Dense Liquid-Cooled Halls
The slab, columns and anchorage you fix at design time cap the rack density a hall can ever host, and a poured slab is the hardest thing to change later. Set the load states from mass, reactions and movement; rack kilowatts do not supply them.
6.3
Building Envelope, Architecture & Site Civil Works
The envelope and site are the parts you cannot cheaply retrofit: a one-time bet on climate, security and load, locked into the ground before the first GPU is ordered. Specify the leakage, drainage and heavy-haul acceptance tests before that bet is poured.
6.4
Modular & Prefabricated Construction
Prefabrication builds the plant in a factory while the site is prepared. It buys earlier service only when it shortens the path that governs your date, and only with standardized subsystems, a secured factory slot and a haul route that can carry the modules.
6.5
Fire Detection, Suppression & Life-Safety
Fire and life safety is an insurability gate that can veto a cooling fluid, battery chemistry or density choice already made. It is cheap at scoping and brutal at the insurer's review. Adopted law, insurer conditions and the equipment listing must each be met.
6.6
Construction Execution, Sequencing & Phased Turnover
An AI data center earns nothing until megawatts are energized and accepted. The schedule that matters delivers turnover-sized blocks against a fast-depreciating GPU life, and is sequenced around whichever of civil work, equipment, utility power or acceptance controls the finish.
6.7
Rack Civil Integration: Mass, Floor-Loading & Seismic Anchoring
A GB200/GB300 NVL72 rack weighs about 1.4–1.5 tonnes wet (3,000–3,300 lb); NVIDIA puts a Vera Rubin NVL72 near 1.8 tonnes (about 4,000 lb). Slab, anchors and the dock-to-row route need verifying for that load, and a passing rack position does not release a failed route.
6.8
Acoustic & Emissions Engineering Design
Permits fix noise and emissions limits years before construction, so the setback, placement, attenuators and day-one SCR that meet them belong in the site plan before any steel goes up. Prove every operating mode against them at acceptance, generator testing included.
6.9
Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Across Build & Operate
800 VDC, liquid loops, on-site gas and maintenance beside live equipment raise density and goodput, and each puts a worker one mistake from a fatality. A continuously run EHS program has to prevent it.
